Well its here, after 5 years of waiting for some, (not me, couldn't give a flying ....), microsofts latest operating system is amongst us, launched this Tuesday (30/1/07) windows Vista, available in 32 or 64 bit forms. Minimum computer spec to run it smoothly and quickly will basically be: dual core processor or better, minimum 1GB RAM, a half decent graphics card (128mb+) etc etc.

But the question is, is anyone here going to upgrade ?? If so why ?? I don't fully understand the benefits for the everyday user....... :D

so thats it then as from tuesday we are all operating obsolute machines,i read this in the paper today but what made me chuckle is there is already critticle updates for it and it aint on the market yet :D

Microsoft have stopped supporting Winxp service pack1 and 1a .

With the release of Vista I believe they will give WinXP service pack2 until the end of 2008 and then stop supporting it.

It would be best to upgrade sometime before then.

Best not to upgrade to Vista just yet....wait for the first service pack to fix the bugs !

Obviously if you were buying a new PC or doing a serious upgrade then it would be better to have Vista than WinXP

...i will be sticking with windows xp for now, and will upgrade nearer the end of this year, or early next year - if when iv read about the new system, it sounds worth the money...

there's always problems with new things, so let someone else suffer them.

Gregor's...i heard that its supposed to be really secure, but someone hacked in to the Microsoft servers and messed it about lol

I've used Vista and on the surface it seems ok, there are some nice tricks up it's sleeve, however with Microsofts track record on security and reliability my main PC and Laptop will be using XP Pro for some time to come, maybe until Vista SP1 !! Vista is yet to prove itself in the real world and as my business requires a reliable OS, I can't afford to be sorting out a BSOD when I'm supposed to be fixing a clients PC. anyone remember MS Millenium Edition??

Vista - the permanent lock in from Microsoft

My mate just bought a copy of Vista - he is building a machine for his Girlfriend - He decided instead to remove the copy of XP Media centre from his machine and install it on the new build so as to have the Vista on his machine. When he installed - he couldn't activate. When he called MS they told him that the software is coded to the MB and that it is installed for life.

So he now has to leave the MC software where it is and install the Vista on his new machine -. Remember he has the key codes for both sets ,both are genuine. When he spoke to MS they told him that's it - read your T's & C's.

Basically if your machine catches fire and burns then having the CC and codes won't cut it.

Pile of sh*te!!!

I understand that the recent tie up between Ford and the Vole will possibly mean that future Galaxys will be supplied with ECU software that will need to be activated. You will not be able to transfer your software (i.e. sell your car) and any modifications will render the software invalid and the car undriveable.

As if......

I have a mate who is a computer engineer, he told me that he read i a trade paper that there was a major fault with Vista, if the program felt it was being attacked or accessed from an external source it would delete all the info that was on the Harddrive, pitty the company that networked all there comp's before the fix. ( if there was one )

XP just went tits up on me! <_< in it's attempt to kill it's self it decided to switch off system restore :( so no back from the brink of defeat for me then :( so VISTA is loaded and up and running  so far so good ^_^ it's doing everything for me! downloading all the updates for my hardware, doing it's own updating, informing of the lack of antivirus, set up my network and the install time was real quick! non of this sit there and swap cd's and loading service packs..... etc, one disc, sit back and read a book and before you know it it starting up :)

Ive been using it since its release, and have no issues with it whatsoever.

is that on a new machine??

It doesn't offer any decent benifets yet to justify the cost and lack of hardware/software support.

Will wait until I have to upgrade or replace my existing pc.

No/Yes/Sort of!!

I had a bit of a disaster with my PC, PSU burnt out and took the motherboard and CPU with it so I did a little upgrading. 650w PSU, SLi mobo, 2 gigs DDR2 a couple of raptor HDD's that I had lying around, and a 3800X2 CPU which was a temporary measure as my local supplier didn't have any faster ones in stock. The plan was to swap it for another, but i think im probably gonna wait as i quite fancy going intel.

So the PC is mostly new but with my existing optical drives and graphics cards (till I get some DX10 ones), ive left out my audigy 2 sound card at the moment as Creative have yet to come up with a proper driver (if they even bother, its getting on a bit now)

Ive had no issues with software either, although admittedly i havent put a great deal on here.

650w power supply !

Does it make toast as well ?

I've got an old 250w one you can have...

Trouble is, by the time you've installed all the stuff like new processor and fan, graphics card, extra memory, sound card, three hard drives, USB/Firewire card, USB hub, DVD burner, CD-RW drive, floppy drive (yes I know, why bother), TV card, a new fan to keep it all cool, etc. the thing is up to 500W.

Am i a little behind the times here or is my ZX Spectrum still upto date.

Had to change to Vista cos old PC went up in smoke and to be honest i find things hard work as i have no understanding of pc,s at all.

If it doesnt work when i switch it on then im knackered.

Give me a socket set and a ring spanner and you can keep me amused all day but pc,s

nah dont think so.

Since starting this thread I have bought and installed Vista Home Premium edition on my Vaio, and I have to say that so far I am very impressed. Ignore any bad press that you may have heard, people are always too quick to criticise anything new.

The install took a couple of hours, but needs no prompting, so can be left overnight if necessary to get on with it. I chose to upgrade from XP, this method tranfers everything across to the new platform, and believe it or not everything worked, all my old software and all my old hardware, with no additional drivers required, it checks the net and installs them automatically during the install.

It doesn't actually do much more than XP did, but it is afterall a luxury upgrade for the time being. Its just nice to try and keep up with the latest technological advances!

The overall look and feel is superior to XP, the stability is perfect and I would highly recommend it. Rather than me list all the new features, click the Microsoft link below and see it for yourself.

Just to reiterate, I had no issues whatsoever with any XP software, or any XP drivers during the upgrade, shop around for the prices as they vary quite a lot.
